Knowing When It’s Time To Move On

Four Signs That Mbroken-heart-girl-cartoon2ay Be Telling You It’s Time To End It

It is always difficult to end a relationship, especially when you have invested a good deal of time, effort and emotion with another person.

However, it is better to remain honest with your self and/or the person whom you care about, especially to prevent further damage or frankly, wasted time.

No relationship is perfect, and everything worth having takes effort. This advice is not to meant to encourage you to go running at the first sign of trouble.

Rather, if you know in your heart and mind you have done all you can to make things work and are still not seeing the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ or the ‘road smooth out after some rough spots,’ then perhaps it is time to take a different road – one that will make you both ultimately happier.

There are three parts to the relationship needs triangle; intellectual, emotional, and sexual. If any one or more of these areas have ceased to function, the triangle is not complete and therefore, fails.

Here are a few signs that may help you see a bit more clearly that it may be time to bow out gracefully.

  1. You or your partners physical/sexual needs are not being met.
This does not mean you are in a ‘slow time’ sexually – this is when you have reached numbness all the way to repulsiveness. Sex should not be forced, painful or completely self-serving. If you have quit giving (or being open to receive), and there are not other factors blocking your intimacy (depression, major stress, etc.) then the end-of-the-road signs may be there.
  2. You no longer respect or trust your partner.
Perhaps your partner has repeatedly lied, cheated or broken promises over time. We all have our limits of forgiveness, and after a while, this can cause irreversible damage to our self-respect, respect for our partner, and our commitment.
  3. Your partner’s behavior has become dangerous.
This goes along with respect. A sure way to show someone their love doesn’t matter is to harm them physically, or to repeatedly self-harm. This could take different forms, such as verbal or physical abuse, increased alcohol and/or drug use, or a passionate, dogmatic approach to a cause or group that is negative or harmful toward others.
  4. You no longer have the same goals.
This is a common reason for a breaking point to occur. If one of you wants children for example, and the other does not, or if one of you wants to move out of the country and go back-packing across Europe while the other is very happy where they are, the list goes on… Compromise does not mean giving up one’s life direction or big goals.

Bottom line here is – trust yourself.

Believe in love – a love that will cause you to want to be an even better woman or man because that is the way your partner makes you feel.

A relationship should drive us to become even stronger, more passionate and to borrow that old cliché, more complete.

You deserve it. Your partner deserves it. The question is, are you able to give what you deserve to each other? If not, perhaps it is time to give each other the freedom to find what you rightfully deserve elsewhere.
