My coaching program, The Best Year of Your Business and Your Life, is about making more money by working smarter, not harder. Money is important, but money is not the only solution to having a life you love. I appreciate this quote from “The 4-Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferriss:
“There is much to be said for the power of money as currency (I’m a fan myself), but adding more of it just isn’t the answer as often as we like to think. In part, it’s laziness. ‘If only I had more money’ is the easiest way to postpone the intense self-examination and decision-making necessary to create a life of enjoyment – now and not later. By using money as the scapegoat and our work as our all-consuming routine, we are able to conveniently disallow ourselves the time to do otherwise …”
Exercise – What Would You Do?
Imagine that I am going to pay you $200,000 this year to work. You can do anything you want with the $200,000, except buy expensive items like homes, land and vehicles. The money is to be used for living expenses, pleasure, travel, learning experiences, etc. You can buy things with it that enable you to participate in activities. For example, you could buy a fishing pole if you want to do some fishing. The idea is, you have the total freedom to spend your time however you want. You’re not allowed to work.
– What would you do this year?
– Who would you spend your time with? List their names.
– What activities would you fill your year with? List them.
– Would you travel? Which countries would you go to? List them.
– What would your ideal day look like? Describe this day from waking up to laying down to sleep.
Now that you have identified some things you would love to do, don’t wait until you’re rich or retired to start making them happen.
Look back over what you wrote in Steps 1-5 and think about what it would take to start incorporating these activities into your life this year. What will be your first action steps?
