If you’re trying to figure out how to help your husband have the “sex talk” with your teen boy – you’ll want to know this (it surprised even me): “One third of ninth graders have had intercourse.”
This was published online at Pediatrics in a study called “Talking Parent, Healthy Teens.”
What also came out of the study was that boys were the ones who usually missed out on “the sex talk.”
So, as a mom of a son, how do you make sure that your husband has this talk early enough to make a difference?
For some moms this can be a challenge. On the one hand, you want to leave it to Dad to handle, on the other hand, you want to make sure that your son has this important information, before he needs it.
The best way to handle this is to bring it up to your husband, directly and in private.
If you’ve been reading my ebook, you know that I wouldn’t recommend swooping down and telling your husband the best way to handle it. But it’s totally appropriate to suggest that you’ve been thinking about it and was wondering what he was thinking?
I usually recommend using language that sets the stage: “Honey, I have something important I’d like to talk about with you. Is this a good time?” Obviously, wait until you know you both have a few minutes.
If you also have a daughter, this makes it easier as you and your husband can have a strategy session about how each of you will handle your conversations.
What’s important to remember is that as parents, it’s our job to bring up “the talk” 1) even if we feel uncomfortable, 2) before your children become sexually active, and 3) even if they say things like “yeah, Dad, I already know.”
If you don’t feel equipped to do this, there are many articles and books that can give you ideas on what to say and describe what is age-appropriate.
Moms, please know that even though many of us Dads act cool around this topic, we actually want your help. Your husband likely wants yours.
