As the year is ending and we are getting ready to take a holiday break, it’s a great time to reflect on the past year (and even past decade as we begin the 2nd decade of the new millennium) and take a second look at your goals and how far you’ve come. It is also a time to begin to set the agenda for where you want to go in the next year.
As you reflect on what you’ve accomplished, I would like to give you a way to think about where you are and how you got here (also if you continue reading I have a special holiday gift for you). When looking at accomplishing goals, it is helpful to notice how you motivate yourself to accomplish them. Because how you motivate yourself is extremely important in how effortlessly you accomplish them.
We are motivated primarily in two directions – towards inspiration or away from discomfort. When you are motivated towards inspiration then you are consistently motivated to take action because it just feels good. When you are motivated away from discomfort, you only feel motivated when you are uncomfortable and you lose your motivation as soon as you feel comfortable.
You can probably begin to see the struggle you will go through if you are primarily motivated away from discomfort. That is why you struggle losing weight or are constantly having financial difficulties or (insert your challenges here).
So when you are reviewing your goals from the last year, ask yourself “why is this important to me?” If you answer with nothing but positive feelings and desires then you can be sure that you are motivated by inspiration. If you answer with statements like, “well I don’t want . . . ” then you’ve identified an away from discomfort motivator.
What do you do with this information? That is the real work of transformation – healing those past hurts, letting go of guilt and sadness, overcoming those old fears. Isn’t it time you gave yourself that gift?
